CS focuses on rural lockups

Minister for Correctional Services Chris Nangoi says rural lockups will be commissioned for Bogia, Menyamya, Kabum and Balimo over the next two-and-a-half years
This will help ease up prison overcrowding, which Correctional Services (CS) has been trying to address over the last four years.
Speaking at the passing out parade of 114 CS officers and commissioning of nine cadet officers, Nangoi said: “With these projects (rural lockups) becoming a reality, additional manpower will be needed to boost the current manpower of 1,408 to 2,000 by 2022 to meet the demand.
“Currently, our record shows that our detainee to staff ratio in accordance to international standard is shocking and this issue needs to be addressed immediately.”
He said the issue of manpower shortage was one of the main problems but the bigger issue was accommodation for staff after recruitment and posting.
Nangoi said he would push the government for a bigger budget to fix the ongoing problems.
He said he wanted to see more low-risk prisoners going out to the community to provide community service work to clean towns, do maintenance work in schools and hospitals and carry out awareness campaigns to educate school-aged children and younger people to stay away from crime.
The nine cadet officers included a female and of the 114 recruited, 25 were females.
