CS officers warned to bring inmates to court on time

A SUPREME Court justice has warned Correctional Services (CS) officers in Lae to bring inmates to court on time or face the consequences.
Justice Allan David yesterday told the CS officers from Buimo prison that it was disappointing for judges to wait for prisoners to be brought in. “This is disappointing and the court will not entertain such lateness,” he said.
“This should be the last time for prisoners to be brought in very late.
“The next time the same situation happens, CS officials responsible will be held accountable.”
He said the practice was happening not only in Lae but also in other places.
Normally, court cases before the magistrates and judges begin at either 9.30am or 1.30pm.
Yesterday at the Supreme Court in Lae, prisoners who appeared for their appeal cases were brought into court at around 10.45am.
Justice David said the Supreme Court was the highest court in the land and for it to be delayed for such reason was disappointing.
“Timing is very important and we have to work with time.
“If it’s at 9.30am, then it should be at that time. And if it’s at 1.30pm, then it should be (at 1.30pm).”
