Curtain Brothers women’s T20 tournament starts with Mariners in top form

The Curtain Brothers Twenty-20 Women’s Smash Tournament started yesterday with the Mariners beating Black Bass by 55 runs in the opening match at Amini Park in Port Moresby.
Mariners opened their innings with PNG Lewas star Vicky Ara setting the pace for her side with 34 runs from 24 balls while teammate Kila Frank added 31 runs from 40 balls in their team total of 120 runs.
The Mariners attack comprising Ravini Oa, Sibona Jimmy and Diari Homoka easily accounted for a young Bass side led by Tanya Ruma with the Bass bowled out for 65.
Meanwhile, the Isuzu National Cup 50-over competition on Friday saw a Norman Vanua-led team Yellow beat team Red by four wickets.
A master class from Yellow paceman Ale Nao saw him grab a five-wicket haul in team Red’s 105-run total in 24 overs.
Team Yellow’s Steven Eno (36 runs) and Jason Kila (32 not out) guided their side to the target (106) in the 16th over for the loss of six wickets.
Saturday’s match-up saw Lega Siaka score a century (102 runs of 95 balls) and take a wicket to help team Black edge team Red by eight runs.
Siaka with teammate Kevau Tau (38 from 64) helped Black post 247 runs from their 50 overs.
The Reds put in a brave chase with Nigani Heni’s 70 from 75 balls the highlight in his side’s 239 total. Team Black captain Assad Vala, paceman Nosaina Pokana and man-of the-match Siaka all took wickets.
