THE National Court in Waigani is set to sentence a woman on Nov 29 for posting insulting comments on an EMTV journalist on Facebook about two years ago.
Acting Justice Laura Kuvi on Monday told Quintina Selmah Saun, of East Sepik’s Sambamgan village that the comments she posted intended to tarnish the reputation and profession of Theckla Gunga.
The court heard that Saun, on June 25, 2019, posted on Facebook a screenshot of Levi Opp’s post of Gunga with the caption “ba umi sa drop by yet, Levi Oppu you win”. A post between July 24 and 30, 2019, saying “TB patient, you are really asking for a permanent damage to be done on your face. Ladies, let me know when TB patient comes around.
Time you kirapim pukpuk, there is not turning back”.
“The State has alleged that the comment posted was defamatory and she did it with the intention to tarnish her reputation and profession,” Justice Kuvi said.
“The act is in violation of the cybercrime code.”
Saun was charged with violation of cybercrime code and one count of defamation. Saun pleaded guilty after Justice Kuvi read her the charges. Justice Kuvi accepted her lawyer’s application to present a pre-sentence report on the next hearing on Nov 29.
