PEOPLE living in areas prone to tropical cyclones have been warned to take precautions, especially when travelling at sea.

National Weather Service assistant director Jimmy Gomoga said areas, especially in the Solomon and Coral seas, should be wary of strong north-westerly winds that could later form into a tropical cyclone.

Provinces on notice are Milne Bay, Central, Western, Gulf, Northern, West and East New Britain and the Autonomous Region of Bougainville.

Gomoga said: “People must know that the strong north-west wind surges come through at this time of the year.”

The National Weather Service is monitoring the situation and will keep people informed of any adverse developments.

It will keep the National Disaster Office informed.

“Tropical cyclones might form during this month up to May.

“We are in the peak of the wet season and most storms form in January and February,” Gomoga said.

He said the wet season was expected in the country at this time of the year.

“Papua New Guinea is at the peak of the wet season and showers and thunderstorms are expected,” he said.

“The average wet season begins in November and finishes in May every year.”

Port Moresby is expected to experience heavy rain throughout the week. It will slow down a bit later this week.
