PHILEMON Kimisive, Makara Hura and Gairo Kapana scored a try each to help the Central Dabaris claim an 18-6 Digicel Cup win over Gulf Isou in Port Moresby on Saturday.
Gulf were the first team to score with five-eighth Gabby Taune crossing over for a try to take a 6-0 lead in round one at Sir John Guise Stadium.
But the Dabaris maintained their composure to respond three minutes later with an unconverted try by former Goroka Lahanis winger Kimisive, who played in the centres.
Isou winger Blemmer Shadrach was ruled to have committed a professional foul for obstructing play after Kapana made a line break.
The Dabaris opted for a goal penalty with five-eighth Junior Belo delivering two points to draw level with Isou (6-6).
Belo then combined with halfback Sebastian Gaudi to send Makara Hura over on the left edge to give the Dabaris a 10-6 lead.
But errors from both sides saw a string of penalties going both ways before the Dabaris secured another two-pointer through Belo for a 12-6 halftime lead.
A quiet second half saw both sides struggle to score points with errors and penalties dominating the game.
But the Dabaris’ backline found space to send Kapana over for the Dabaris’ final try in the 68th minute.
“It was scrappy but it’s great to get a first-round win,” Dabaris coach Bagelo Solien said.
“With no football in a while, you can understand how we played today.
“Overall, it was a good effort in defence but it’s still early days.
“We’d like to see how we performance in the next few weeks.”
