A MAN who told the court he had to sell marijuana to pay for his children’s school fees has been jailed for one year.
Goroka District Court Magistrate Gerard Vetunawa told Sennol Namba that there were legal ways of generating income to pay school fees.
Namba was caught by security officers at Goroka airport last Wednesday trying to leave on a flight to Port Moresby with 15kg of marijuana neatly packed in a bag.
The scanning machine at the airport detected the contents.
National Airports Corporation security officers Elkin Jimmy and Monica Kaso alerted police.
Namba from the Unggai-Bena told the court he was going to sell it in Port Moresby to raise money for his children’s school fees.
Magistrate Vetunawa said it was illegal to sell marijuana which was harmful to people.
Namba also told the court that he had given K200 to a Night Owl Security officer manning the door to let the bag through. The security officer was also arrested.
Meanwhile, managing director of the security firm Winchlee Oibotee condemned the action of the officer who has been sacked.
