Governor-General Sir Bob Dadae has relayed his condolences to the families who lost loved ones and properties during Monday’s 7.5 magnitude earthquake.
Sir Bob said the loss of lives and properties made it one of the worst natural disasters to hit the country in recent years.
“It is devastating to note that a lot of people lost their lives and many communities, businesses and government services have been destroyed,” he said.
“Losing loved ones in such tragic circumstances is never easy. Lady Hannah and I are devastated by the news of this tragedy and we pray that God’s peace and guidance see you through this difficult period.
“I acknowledge the efforts of the authorities on the ground who are now doing all they can to reach the affected communities.
“We appreciate the efforts of individuals and organisations who are working tirelessly to bring relief supplies to those affected. May divine wisdom and guidance be your guide at this difficult time.”
Australian Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop extended the nation’s condolences to the people in the Highlands region.
A statement said: “We are saddened to hear reports of lives lost and many people being injured. Given the challenging terrain and remoteness of the area, we expect that the extent of the damage will become clearer in the coming days.
“At the request of the PNG government, Australia is providing a RAAF C-130 aircraft to conduct aerial surveillance and provide logistical support to the PNG Defence Force.
“An Australian-funded specialist working in the PNG National Disaster Centre is assisting with information management and coordination.
“A team from Geoscience Australia has also been supporting the PNG Government with monitoring and reporting on seismic activity.
“Australia stands ready to assist further if requested by the Government of PNG.”
