OIL Search Limited and Papua New Guinea Cancer Foundation launched the Oil Search Port Moresby Daffodil Corporate Golf Challenge in Port Moresby yesterday.
The challenge, one of the longest-running golf tournaments in Port Moresby, raises funds for the Papua New Guinea Cancer Foundation to carry out educational and awareness programmes on prevention.
Foundation chairman Gerea Aopi, executive manager Priscillar Napoleon and Oil Search senior communications adviser Celestine Ove launched the challenge.
“Oil Search is pleased to be in a long-term partnership with the foundation to create more awareness among our people about the negative impacts of cancer,” Ove said.
“This year, Oil Search celebrates 90 years of operation as a proud PNG company.
“It also marks the 17th consecutive year that the company has sponsored the challenge with funding of K25,000.
“Oil Search’s partnership with the foundation is a valuable investment that not only extends our reach but also allows us to leverage local expertise and knowledge.”
Aopi acknowledged the continuous support from Oil Search towards the fight against cancer in PNG by supporting the foundation to conduct its programmes. He also extended his congratulatory remarks to Oil Search on its 90th anniversary.
“I take this opportunity to thank the Port Moresby business community for their continued support towards the Daffodil Corporate Challenge over the years,” he said.
“Whether through registering teams to participate, sponsorship of prizes and/or cash donations, all the support that we have received has undoubtedly contributed to the success of this annual event.”
When acknowledging the continued support from Oil Search since 2003, Napoleon highlighted a reach of over 6,000 individuals, including more than 3,000 students in schools and participants from communities, across PNG through awareness of cancer prevention and early detection conducted by the foundation from the support of corporate companies like Oil Search who are leading the way.
“I take this opportunity to congratulate Oil Search for 90 years in PNG and to also thank Oil Search for their 17 years of support to the foundation,” she said.
“All funds raised from the 2019 challenge will go towards bringing cancer education and awareness programmes to communities and schools throughout PNG in 2020.”
The challenge is an event on the foundation’s calendar which runs throughout August under the Daffodil Campaign month.
The campaign focuses on empowering Papua New Guineans. It is aimed at providing hope for a healthier nation by encouraging Papua New Guineans to make healthier choices.
According to an Oil Search statement, the PNG Institute of Medical Research estimates one in 10 deaths in PNG are cancer related.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), one in three cancer cases worldwide is preventable by choosing a healthy lifestyle.
“Let’s start the conversation about cancer prevention today,” Napoleon said.
“Eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly and protect your family from developing cancer in the future. Don’t smoke, don’t chew betel nut and reduce your alcohol intake.”
The golf challenge tees off at the Royal Port Moresby Golf Club on Aug 30.
