THE damaged part of the road from Laiagam to Kandep in Enga is being upgraded to allow for heavy vehicles carrying bridge parts to pass through.
The damaged road cannot take heavy vehicles which are carrying the parts for the Wasa Bridge which connects Kandep district in Enga to Hela. It costs K10 million.
“The Central Supply and Tenders Board has awarded the contract to a contractor,” Kandep MP Alfred Manase told The National.
“The difficulty we have is that a certain section of the road between Laiagam and Kandep, because of a landslide, has become narrow. Big trucks cannot pass through.
“Ninety-six metres of bridge parts were brought up from Lae and have been sitting at the Works Department depot in Wabag for the past three months.”
Manase said a contractor in Enga had been engaged to patch it up and expand the width of the road.
“The bridge parts will need 16 twin-steer vehicles from Wabag to Kandep. Work has already started. By (this) week, we are hoping that the road-widening at the Pangu section of the Laiagam-Kandep Road is completed, and we can start moving the bridge parts.
“We are looking at construction starting in early September.”
Manase said work could take three to four months.
“The bigger job will be driving the piers into the bedrock.
As soon as that it is complete, we will then have a road that will connect Southern Highlands, Enga and Kandep.”
