DARKERS beat Rainbow Rangers 4-2 in Gerehu Off-Season Rugby League round four match in Port Moresby on Saturday.
The game played at the Gerehu Sports Centre was a tight affair between the two teams that saw some entertaining football played.
Darkers fullback Emmanuel Taviri scored two minutes into the first half with an unconverted try. A penalty on the Darkers 10m line by Junior Bando saw Rangers trailing by two points at the half-time.
The second stanza was a close game with both teams competing on even terms all the way to the final whistle.
Rangers were thwarted by some determined defence and that saw the half time score carried through to the final whistle.
Darkers coach John Nema said their aim was to win the competition and logging a hard fought win over the Rangers would only make them a better side.
He said despite not having a sponsor the players were all positive and always turned up and played for each other. Nema said for many of his players rugby league was a way to release their energy and do something enjoyable and be part of a team.
“We have a group of committed players and some of them are talented and they will do well.
“We might even produce a Hunter or Kumul here.”
