A 2.5km long guard rail, or safety rail, along the Gumine road in Chimbu is nearing completion, an official says.
Project engineer Peter Kumulgo said work on the barrier included laying of concrete pavement on the road 1km long and line drainage
“The kind of work we are doing here is normally done in mining sites,” he said.
“We are using black pipes to reinforce the guard rail.
“When hit by vehicles, the iron pipes will only bend.
“It will save lives and vehicles in Gumine and Salt Nomane-Karamui.”
Project contractor Albert Kia, of SAAWF Construction, acknowledged the contribution and support given by the people of Gumine, Kumai-Bomai and Digine local level government councils in providing labour to the project.
The Minegone road safety project, is an initiative of the Gumine district development authority (DDA), costing K1.5 million.
Local leaders in Dirima and Gumine in Chimbu thanked the Gumine DDA for the project.
Leaders representing the five council wards of Dirima-Yani, Aina Gikobe, Alua Simon, Henry Sine, Ignas Warmil and Alua Peke said the project would save vehicles ploughing into the deep gorge that had boulders on Marigl River bank.
Former village court magistrate, Aina Gikobe, said at least 13 accidents had occurred there.
