THE Kotna Lutheran primary school in the Dei district, Western Highlands , celebrated independence with the opening of two double classrooms.
The classrooms were funded by the school board of management, with the help of parents, staff and students using the school fees and subsidies.
Evangelical Lutheran church in Hagen district president Rauka Rawa commended the initiative taken in setting up the classrooms.
He said such was the true meaning on being independent as they had practised selfreliance and had not waited for external funding.
Rawa said to practise independence; people should not wait for free handouts from the government.
He said that given the current situation of the government, people should take the initiative to help themselves “instead of waiting for someone else” to do it for them.
Rawa added that the church had played its part in setting up the school and now it was up to the school’s administration, board, and stakeholders to bring the school to the next level.
The celebration also brought life to the otherwise quiet surrounding communities if the school administration had not taken the initiative to acknowledge the day.
