THE national team brought home the Oceania Football Confederation Women’s Nations Cup trophy for the first time since their inaugural participation in the tournament in 1989.
After nine attempts, the five-time Pacific Games gold medallists finished the tournament undefeated, sinking hosts Fiji 2-1 in the final at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva Saturday.
National Airports Corporation managing director Rex Kiponge and National Gaming Control Board chairman Clemence Kanau joined the public in welcoming home the team at Jackson International Airport yesterday.
Prime Minister James Marape was unable to attend the event.
Families and the public turned out in numbers with welcome banners and PNG flags, to greet the team as the Air Niugini flight had a wash-down on the runway in the nation’s capital.
Head coach Nicola Demaine told The National that the team were emotional upon their return as they had never been greeted like this before.
“It’s such a great reception for the women to see their country out there in numbers to welcome us,” she said.
“I wasn’t expecting it to be like this, it’s amazing. It’s more emotional for the women because it’s their country and people should be proud of what they’ve done.
“To have the country come out and greet us is just amazing.
“Some player who are mothers, have reunited with their babies and families.
“They were keen to get home to their families.”
Meanwhile, PNG Football Association general secretary Puis Letenge welcomed the team, saying their achievement was a milestone for football in the country.
“It marks a new era of football in PNG,” Letenge said.
“A new chapter of women’s football in this country has been written. Enjoy the atmosphere because you deserve it.
“While you are out celebrating, share the experience that you have gained in that tournament and the challenges you’ve faced.
“This is just one part of our journey.
“We will stand and work together with PNG football, sponsors, supporters and everyone in our next journey. We will make sure we realise your dream (of qualifying for the World Cup).”
