THE University of Goroka (UOG) and the Education Department have signed a memorandum of agreement (MoA) to work together to provide quality teacher education.
UOG acting vice-chancellor Dr Teng Waninga and Education secretary Dr Uke Kombra signed the MoA.
Kombra said the collaboration between the Education Department and UOG was discussed in June 2020 to work together to provide quality teacher education.
“With the MoA, there are many things that we will work together to improve,” he said.
“There’s a drop in enrolment of teachers in the country.
“We also decommissioned some teachers who are in the classrooms and we want UOG to work with us very closely so quality must come out.
“We need to agree to a set of standards for the teachers and we hope with the signing, we’ll meet the commitments not just for teacher education but elementary to secondary level too.”
Kombra said other things they would look at in the MoA included the number of teachers going into private education institutions, science technology engineering and mathematics education.
Waninga said with the MoA, UOG would have a representative at the national education board and the Education Department would have a representative at UOG to work together, especially in the quality of teachers passing out each year.
“We have lost our context with the Education Department and the MoA is the way to come together again to realign and be partners again,” he said.
