THE Department of Foreign Affairs and the Chinese embassy in Port Moresby are looking into the circumstances surrounding the death of a PNG student in China.
The student, originally from Porgera in Enga, is understood to have been in prison when he died.
Minister for Foreign Affairs Rimbink Pato told The National that the department of foreign affairs was trying to find out what happened to the student.
He is expected to release a statement today once he gets more information.
A spokesperson from the Chinese embassy told The National that they did not have any information on the matter but would look into it.
Thompson Kualara, the father of the deceased, said he was told by “authorities” two weeks ago that his son, (name withheld) was in prison.
He could not give any further information on why his son was in prison.
Kualara said the family was awaiting further advice from authorities in China before repatriating the body back to PNG.
