Detainee stopped from escaping

A PRISON detainee tried to escape by confidently walking out of a court room but was chased and caught by an alert security guard in the Waigani committal court on Friday.
Luke Lone, from Enga, was waiting for magistrate Tracy Ganai to be charged with two counts each of abduction and serious assault when he walked out of the court room.
Although Lone was brought back to court by the security guard to face charges, Ganai did not arraign Lone because he gave conflicting answers on his age and place of origin.
Lone told the court that he was 26 years old but the police file listed him as 32 while he stated that his village was Tui, not Andatale as recorded by police investigators.
Police prosecutor Sgt Joseph Sangam told the court that he would confirm with the arresting officer on the information given by Lone.
“What we have in the charge sheet as well as the information are okay and they correspond. Lone says he is from Enga but just now he mentioned another village, so that is the reason I like to confirm with the investigating officer,” he added.
Ganai then adjourned the matter to Jan 14.
