RAMU NiCo Management (MCC) Ltd recently donated building materials and cement bags to kick-start the construction of a new all-weather fresh food market at Basamuk in Madang.
This followed the signing of a memorandum of agreement (MoA) between local landowner representative of Mindre village, Sapung Gull, MCC’s community affairs gender and agriculture officer Tony Gaiyu and two ward councillors Kuel Gunaelem from ward 28 and Dongembu Dugai from ward 30 of the Saidor local level government (LLG).
According to MCC, the new Kokou fresh food market which would cost around K60,000 to build is situated at the entrance to the MCC workers township at Basamuk.
Gaiyu said work on building the concrete pavement was completed with iron-roofing shelters to be built soon with partitioning of the different sections of the market to follow later.
He said according to the design done by Ramu NiCo community affairs field officer, the new Kokou market would also have a canteen, food storage area and iron fencing around the market perimeter and a gate.
Gaiyu explained that the market would be divided into sections where rural farmers would go to sell their produce to employees of Ramu NiCo.
“There will be different sections allocated for fresh vegetables and fruit and also a section for fresh meat and fish,” Gaiyu said.
