A TEAM of medical officers has been sent to Makura village in
the Ialibu-Pangia district in Southern Highlands to check out reports of a diarrhoea outbreak there.
Dr Carolyn Ure, Ialibu District Hospital medical superintendent, said they had received reports from the village leaders of 27 cases of diarrhoea.
They feared that there could be an outbreak caused by the use of contaminated water.
“We have received reports of 27 cases of diarrhoea and are sending in a team to confirm the reports,” she said.
“They will also check if there is an outbreak.” Ure said if the 27 cases were confirmed, a medical relief team would be sent to the village to treat the people.
Ure said they had also received reports of two cases of post-traumatic disorder.
“With the ongoing earthquakes, people are traumatised. I believe many more will come in.
“We have no psychology ward or specialist in the hospital so we are just counselling them and reassuring them that they are okay.”
The district was one of those in Southern Highlands badly affected by the earthquake which struck on the morning of Feb 26.
