Digicel receives ‘best operator’ award

DIGICEL has been awarded “best operator in an emerging market” for its work in Papua New Guinea at the world communications awards unveiled in London on Wednesday night.
Digicel was shortlisted four times across three categories against the leading lights of the global communications industry at the 21st staging of the awards.
In celebrating the award, Digicel Group chief executive Jean-Yves Charlier said: “The work we do across the globe is truly transformational – particularly true in terms of Papua New Guinea to bring the benefits of digital connectivity to as many people as possible is truly transformational – and that is particularly true in terms of Papua New Guinea.
“As a uniquely challenging market, we are working to bridge the digital divide in PNG and to help create a world where no one gets left behind.
“I couldn’t be prouder of the PNG team – and indeed all of my colleagues in the Digicel family across the world – for what they are able to deliver to our customers in even the toughest environments.”
Spread over 465,000kms and 600 islands of mountainous terrain with over 850 languages, weak infrastructure developments such as roads, fibre and power, rank it 156 out of 187 countries on the Human Development Index. The company noted that it is uniquely placed to drive further uptake with 80 per cent population coverage.
