Disability association calls for help

THE Lae Disability Association (LDA) is calling on authorities to help its members find meaningful employment in the city.
President Nota Kurari made this call after two recent incidents where two of their members were assaulted by some unidentified men for selling items in public places.
“In May they assaulted one of our boys who was doing street sales at the Main Market area,” Kurari said.
“The attack resulted in a big fight after some members of the public supported the victim.
“Disabled street sellers in town have told me that they often fell victim to drunkards and security guards who harassed them and took their cigarettes without paying.”
Kurari said it was an eye-sore to see disabled people hanging about in central business areas doing street sales.
He suggested that a proper place be allocated to them so that they could sell their wares there.
“We should have one of our representatives in the district development authority so that we feel part of this city,” Kurari said.
“We are also asking if the Government can give us to give us some small contracts so that we can earn something to sustain our lives.
“We ask if the Government and business houses can offer employment for some of our members to avoid such harrassment.”
