A HELPLESS disabled girl abandoned in a village when her parents and others fled an attack by rival tribesmen died after she was thrown into a raging fire by the attackers.
Police in Chimbu have described the act as inhumane and cruel and vow to find her killers.
They are investigating the election-related tribal fight between two groups from the Dagle-Mugluaku tribe in Kerowagi district, Chimbu.
Chimbu provincial police commander Supt Augustine Wampe said the violence involved the tribes living near the border of Chimbu and Jiwaka.
Wampe said it was an unfortunate incident when a young disabled girl who was left behind by her parents and relatives had to meet such an act of barbarism.
He said if the rival tribesmen had any sense of human dignity and kindness, they would have spared the life of a helpless girl who could not flee with the others because of her condition.
“When the enemy tribesmen set alight permanent houses containing a shop, several cars and other houses, they should have at least left the little girl alone,” he said.
He did not reveal her identity.
He said she was burnt alive when the tribesmen threw her into the raging fire as a house burnt.
Her remains were found among the ashes.
The intra-tribal fighting was brought under control by the Chimbu provincial peace mediation team assisted by Chimbu Governor Noah Kool who successfully negotiated peace.
“We have arranged for peace and normalcy to return but investigation will continue to apprehend those responsible for the disabled girl’s death,” Wampe said.
