ENGAN settlers at Baruni village in Port Moresby instigated a fight between villagers after they found a body chopped to pieces, according to police.
National Capital District Superintendent operations Michael Tilae confirmed that the body of a man believed to be from Wabag was chopped to pieces and left at the back of one of the newly built houses next to the Baruni roundabout on Saturday.
“The Wabag settlers, who claimed that the deceased was their relative, alleged that the Baruni villagers were responsible for his death,” Tilae said.
He said they went and fought with the Baruni villagers and said they would return in the evening.
“In fear of that, the Baruni people blocked off the road to prevent the Wabag’s from retaliating,” he said.
Tilae said he met with both parties yesterday and the Baruni villagers requested police presence around the area. They said they were wrongly accused of the killing.
Tilae urged both parties to meet at the Boroko police station today to resolve the issue.
“No arrest has been made yet as police are still investigating the fight as well as the killing,” he said.
Tilae said there was also a fight between Tari and Pangia settlers at the Wildlife Settlement in Port Moresby on Wednesday last week.
He said the fight broke out right after the State of Origin game.
He said two men got into an argument and eventually a fight started and resulted in the death of a Tari man.
“Police will have a mediation with the two groups,” Tilae said.
