THIRTY-SIX displaced families from ward 10, Talasea local level government (LLG), were given assistance by West New Britain Governor Sasindran Muthuvel. Muthuvel, when presenting 252 sheets of roofing iron last week, urged communities to refrain from engaging in ethnic fights in the area. “I thank the ward councillor for bringing this matter to my attention,” he said. “Housing is a basic and genuine need for people. “But on the same note, I hate ethnic fighting. “Law and order issues always negatively impact on families, children’s education, loss of life, loss of properties, health and even economic activities. “We have to promote a peaceful environment and encourage attitude change. “And while the Government is more focused on other development priorities, I acknowledge that there are existing social issues and law and order issues. “The Talasea LLG is spearheading the reconciliation process. “Therefore, I appeal again to our people to change their mindset, embrace peace and harmony amongst communities.” Ward 10 member Alex Raka, thanked Muthuvel for his quick response to their plight and the Talasea LLG for their support in leading the reconciliation programme. Following the fighting, Raka said many families were forced to leave their homes, which affected their small economic activities.
