THE South Bougainville development authority has given K700,000 for development in the electorate.
South Bougainville MP and Minister for Information and Communication Technology Timothy Masiu distributed the funding last week.
K500,000 was drawn from the district’s K2 million for the Covid-19-related activities and K200,000 from the district support improvement programme (DSIP) funds.
Local pharmaceutical company Bougainville Pharmacy Ltd received K300,000 under a contract approved by the DDA board at its second meeting in July to source, procure and supply essential drugs to all health facilities in the electorate to combat the Covid-19.
The initiative is also aimed at ensuring essential drugs were readily available to the people in rural communities without having to travel long distances.
K110,000 was presented to the Bougainville police service for the purchase of a high-speed outboard motor to patrol the waters between South Bougainville and the Solomon Islands.
Also, from the Covid-19 funding, K50,000 each was presented to the Arawa and Buka hospitals to help purchase drugs to treat emergency cases referred from South Bougainville.
The two hospitals have been receiving high numbers of referrals from South Bougainville recently which contributed to the depletion of medical supplies, hence, a reported shortage of drugs in the two hospitals.
