Wewak, in partnership with the Women’s Micro Bank, have agreed to roll out credit scheme programmes for micro small medium enterprises in the district.
The bank will work with the Wewak development authority to address issues affecting women in the electorate.
Wewak MP Kevin Isifu, during the signing of an agreement last week, said solutions would be found to make available social and economic avenues.
“This will promote the economics of gender equality, women empowerment and capacity building and trigger financial independence to become a reality,” he said.
“The benefit will alleviate some major social issues affecting women in Wewak.”
Isifu said the district would drive the aspirations of women in Wewak and provide them with financial resources.
“Women will be better educated and transformed becoming meaningful citizens, contributing one way or another towards nation building,” he said.
“Social and economic issues affecting marginalised and under-privileged women will be addressed.
“Different needs and concerns encountered at the ward and community level will be addressed.”
Women make up 51 per cent (34,744) of the population while men make up 49 per cent (33,381).
“The general source of income activities is tied down to informal business marketing activities where people mainly source income for survival on daily business.”
