KOKOPO in East New Britain will focus on building community halls for each ward in its four local level governments (LLGs) – Kokopo-Vunamami Urban, Raluana, Bitapaka and Duke of York Islands, local MP Emil Tammur says.
He was speaking during the opening of a community hall at Tavui 2 in the Bitapaka LLG.
Tammur said building infrastructure such as community halls in all wards in the district would see people go to them for services instead of visiting the district or LLG offices.
He said this would make service delivery more effective.
Tammur said community halls would house offices that would deal with commerce, law and order, ward recording and administration so that people could access these services at their doorstep.
Tammur said the community halls could be used to run life skills training in financial literacy, garment and textile, agriculture and other trainings.
He urged people to start small businesses using their land and resources.
The community hall at Tavui 2 cost K150,000 and was funded by Kokopo city authority using its district services improvement programme funds.
