Rabaul in East New Britain will set up a coconut nursery through a partnership with the Kokonut Industry Koporation (KIK).
ENB KIK programme manager Ephraim Tade said K10,000 from the Rabaul district service improvement programme funding was spent on selected species of coconut or mother palms from the Ramandu plantation in the Lassul Baining local level government.
It will establish the nursery at the Kurakakaul administration along the North Coast Road in Rabaul.
The nursery has a capacity for 15,000 coconut seedlings that will be kept at the Rabaul district headquarters in Kurakakaul.
Tade said the nursery was meant to revive coconut blocks in the district.
“Kurakakaul will be the central nursery while the first site nursery is at Tavui in the Balanataman LLG.”
It will take up to five months for the coconuts to be in the nursery before it is distributed to farmers.
Rabaul administrator Peter Lapim said such initiatives were important to improve the lives of the people and expand the local economy.
