CORRECTIONAL Services Minister Chris Nangoi says Markham district in Morobe will have its own rural lockup.
Nangoi made the announcement at Ewok village, ward 13 in the Leron Wantoat local level government after local leaders raised concerns about the rising law and order problems in their area and the need for a rural lockup.
“In the Correctional Services Department, I will make a commitment to build a rural lockup here in Markham district,” Nangoi said.
He said Morobe’s correctional facility Buimo was overcrowded which has caused jail breaks as well as other management issues. Nangoi said lowrisk prisoners could be held at the district lock ups and will be used to do work in the community.
Leron Wantoat LLG president Matthew Soni urged local MP Koni Iguan to work with Nangoi to ensure the commitment was followed through.
