Cabinet approves forestry submissions

THE Forestry Department has four submissions before the National Executive Council, with four approved.
Minister for Forests Solan Mirism told Parliament yesterday that eight submissions were made.
“These (unapproved) submissions have been approved by my Forestry board and are now before Central Agency Coordinating Committee (CACC) for clearance before NEC’s consideration,” he said.
The four submissions approved were timber legal standard, reforestation and afforestation strategies, downstream processing strategies and revised logging code of practice.
The four submissions still before CACC were amended forestry fees and charges, remodelling of State purchase options, review of the Forestry Act and incentives for genuine investors.
“These are critical policy and business papers that will definitely improve the sector and at the same time improve the way we manage our forests today and for the future generation,” Mirism said.

  • These are very important policy review and frameworks for the forestry department, especially reforestation and afforestation strategies. Many forest have been destroyed and none have bee replaced over the years. For example the Mt Giluwe TRP has destroyed almost 40,000 Hectares of land, but none has be replanted even with the 2% reforestation plan which required to be replanted with some tree or native tree species.

  • Well done Minister, Forestry Department and responsible and key Forestry Department officers for the acts, standards and policies.

Same also done by Minister for Mining & Petroleum so we need the same for Department of Lands & Physical Planning which we also commend.

Land & Physical Planning Department Secretary, Department staff including the Minister are still sleeping despite PNG being 45 years old this month – “WAKE UP” and do something for Lands Department like Forestry and Mining Departments.

  • That is the way forward to take back our forest sector. To other ministers, rise up from where you are and do the same thing to your respective ministries if there any law needs to be reviewed for the good of our nation.
