THE body of a fisherman believed to have been attacked by sea pirates on Monday evening was retrieved by divers from Fairfax Harbour in Port Moresby yesterday.
Port Moresby police station commander Inspector Mark Mosinakave said Henia Heni, his nine-year-old son Nanai, two children aged between six and nine, and two elderly relatives were fishing at the Fairfax Harbour when they were confronted by armed men in a dinghy between 6pm and 7pm.
“The criminals approached them and started throwing stones, swinging bush knives and firing at them,” Mosinakave said.
“The deceased, who was the skipper, was wounded and fell into the sea. An elderly relative also jumped into the sea leaving the kids and the other relative.”
Mosinakave said the thugs removed the boat engine and left.
Mosinakave said Nanai managed to swim ashore and with help of a motorist, informed police who rescued the others in the boat. The divers from Pacific Towing were assisted by Roku villagers and police.
