THE division of community development in Aitape, West Sepik, is promoting 16-days campaign of activism against gender-based violence (GBV).
Officer-in-charge of the division Adolph Tamalako said everyone in the community should work together to have a peaceful community.
“We should work together to find solutions on how we can make our families happy, leading to a peaceful community,” he said.
Tamalako said violence was not only about killing, raping or bashing up a wife, daughter but it was in the way people speak.
“When we speak aggressively or negatively of someone, that is violence,” he said.
According to the division, the 16 days of activism against GBV will be an annual campaign.
The international day for the elimination of violence against women would run until Dec 10.
The activism started on Wednesday in Aitape, with a group involved in a protest march around town and candle-lighting at night.
A woman leader in town Cecilia Mave called on everyone to help support the campaign.
She said the activism period called for community action to increase awareness, stir up advocacy efforts and share knowledge and innovations on GBV.
