Do not ignore warnings

Letters

MUST we continue to ignore the critical warnings put forth to us by the credible think tanks?
A few weeks ago PNG Business Council unreservedly pointed out that the Marape-led government is dangerous to business and the economy.
Several days later the Institute of National Affairs similarly warned the Government on the approach it’s taking in closing the mines saying it was very unhealthy for the economy especially when PNG was suffering from a severe shortfall in revenue and economic activity as global markets were in turmoil and there was severe economic and social disruption and uncertainty.
It does not stop there, as it is getting worse when the Central Bank this week revealed in its second quarter report that employment has crashed and unemployment will continue to rise with the lack of economic activity.
These startling revelations by the state’s very own apparatus and credible think tanks all point towards an impending economic disaster.
Irrespective of which political divide we stand, our country is heading down a slippery slope of economic doom and is no two way about it.
The easy way out, of course, is to pass blame on others and take the back seat relaxing and farting dreams.
It is incumbent upon the government to arrest the situation, stabilise and grow the economy.
The government cannot run away from this mandated fiduciary responsibility.
One year passed and the government has shown no sign of improvement, instead demonstrated its inadequacies of incompetency, complacency, poor choice of options and miscalculations and gross economic mismanagement.
The telltales of poor leadership is all around us.
Our society is facing serious moral decay to the core – gruesome murders, ethnic classes, gender-based violence, lawlessness, etc- with an economic outlook so bleak and compromising.

  • David, some of us knew about unemployment before the central bank came up with their report. What you don’t understand is that this company – BNL was requested to continue run the mine as stipulated in the mining Act to allow for smoother hand over take over however instead opted to take the path of laying off all the 2000 plus employees knowing full well the repercussion of such move. They knew that we PNG already have huge economic issues created by O’Neill, then with the covic 19 Pandamic and all the social issues our government would have no choice but back down on its decision to take over the mine. They knew all alone that some people like you will be emotional when you start seeing all the negative reporting from the mainstream and social media, so they played on the so called experts and think tank that you proudly made reference to, to start stirring up people’s emotions. Don’t you see what they are doing? They have been there when we as a country suffered and lived on borrowed money from the foreign countries and load sharks. What solutions have they come up with to change the direction for the better? Nothing all these years. Now they are barking as if they hold a solution! WE WILL NOT BE FOOLED. Few PNGeans in this group have played second fiddle to all major business and contracts in the past, and with the new government and laws, PNGeans will have the upper hand. So whose interest do you think these PNG business council represent! Foreign owned business if not they would be supportive of the decision.
This government made the decision, which to these thieves and cons artists (foreign crooks) may seem radical but mate, it is worth the pain. We as a country had gone through the real pain the past 50+ years. This is a new direction, new way of thinking, completely new pathway and is aimed ONLY TO MAKE US STOP LIVING IN THE BORROWED LIFE FROM AIDS AND LOANS FROM FOREIGNERS THAT COMES WITH CONDITIONS. A PATH THAT WILL EVENTUALLY MAKE US ENOUGH TO PAY OFF OUR DEBTS WHICH IS ALREADY 30+ BILLIONS AND COUNTING. THIS IS THE PATH TO MAKE US RICH. THIS GOVERNMENT IS AMENDING LAWS ALSO TO PROTECT THOSE FUNDS FROM BEING MISUSED AND IN ANOTHER WORD WORKING TOWARDS TIGHTENING UP THE LAWS TO ENSURE THAT OUR FUNDS ARE BEING MANAGED MORE RESPONSIBLY AND WITH ACCOUNTABILITY.
SO STOP THOSE UNNECESSARY EMOTIONAL OUTBURST THAT ONLY POINTS TO NEGATIVITY!

  • Thank you cloudlands. People like David Lepi is only good at playing on people’s emotions. If is a Nationalist and have a heart for this country, he should be supportive of the government’s strategy to close the loop holes to protect the interests of this country and it’s people.
