THE law established the Ombudsman Appointment Committee (OAC) comprising the prime minister as chairman, the chief justice, opposition leader, permanent parliamentary committee chairman and the public services commission chairman.

With their independent assessment and consideration, they appointed an acting chief ombudsman in their meeting on May 20.

The OAC also heard the appeal of then Chief Ombudsman Rigo Lua for an extension of his term.

As an important constitutional committee, the OAC must be allowed to conduct its business and processes without being politicised.
