The top grade 10 student of Ragiampun Adventist High School in Markham, Morobe, has urged students not to rely too much on internet for research.
Dux student Cecilia Lawrence, 19, from Ragiampun village, said phones were a distraction with many features.
Lawrence disciplined herself by using only books for her studies and came out dux of the newly established SDA School.
Being a new school, it doesn’t have much infrastructure like library, computers and science laboratories.
“Though the school lacks proper facilities, we have a home library, which I used for my research and study,” Lawrence said.
“We have encyclopedias from A to Z at our house.
“When I have assignments, my dad doesn’t’ allow us to use mobile phones.
“I used the home library to do my assignments.”
Lawrence was the second best student in her class at the village primary school when she passed out from Grade 8 in 2015.
She was selected to Markham Valley Secondary the following year and did her Grade 9.
However, the year did not end well due to conflict among students, that led to an all-out tribal conflict between the Amari and Atzera people.
A small quarrel by students with vendors outside the school gate led to a tribal attack that claimed 10 lives in 2016.
Lawrence was forced to withdraw from studies, being from the Amari side.
She repeated Grade 9 last year and graduated this year.
Her dad Lawrence James, a former Sogeri National High School student, always encouraged her to aim high and study hard.
“Students must fear failure to be courageous,” Lawrence said.
