Do something about chaos in Goroka town

Letters

AUTHORITIES continue to overlook the looming chaos of inappropriate land use in Goroka, Eastern Highlands.
If allowed to continue, there will be a lot of issues to deal with later on.
A notable land area is the Peace Park, which is used as a temporary market place.
How long will this go on?
The prolonged indecisiveness is causing a lot of traffic jam.
There is no parking as vendors and buyers take up most of the space.
The continued usage of the park as a market place has turned the once attractive area into an ugly site.
The area is full of rubbish, the green grass is gone, turning the place into a muddy area covered in pig waste. Cooking meat on an open fire near the aerodrome is not safe for planes.
The place is a health and traffic risk.
Apart from this, there is a growing number of residential area used for commercial purposes.
Tucker shops are now more common than before in designated residential areas.
Illegal fencing of allotments and redevelopment of residential buildings are being done without the building board’s approval.
The disorder and the lack of proper planning as well as the failure to adhere to safe building practices is getting out of hand.
The once beautiful town needs to be managed well.
All the necessary laws such as land use planning and control, public health rules, urban planning laws and traffic rules are there for public order and good.
I appeal to the provincial administrator, Goroka town authority, building board, provincial planner, provincial health inspector and provincial traffic superintendent to address this issue.
You do not need politicians to direct you.
You are already mandated officers by law to enforce rules.
Use the rules and bring order into Goroka town.

Manevi Gene,
Goroka
