Dockers edge West Eagles in opening round

THE Dockers claimed a 26-22 win over reigning champions West Eagles in the opening round of the Port Moresby AFL (POMAFL) season at the Colts Oval on Saturday.
The Covid-19 pandemic had no effect on the teams of as they ran in twos and threes in eagerness to be back at the oval.
The small crowd were treated to a feast of fast, flowing football displayed by the four teams.
The opening match at midday between Kokofa-Cats (combined) and Koboni-Magpies (combined) featured a lot of athleticism from Archie Mai Jr, Hapeo Bbogi and Glen Saniong (of Kokofa-Cats) while Kelly Kaugla, Ryan Kororo, and Evere and Scott Johnson (of Koboni-Magpies) had their fair share of possession.
Kokofa-Cats drew the first points on the scoreboard and they maintained the lead to the final whistle and ran out eventual winners 32-27.
The main match between reigning premiers West Eagles and Dockers was similar to the first match.
Eagles’ Greg Ekari, Clyde Pulah Alonge Mondo and the Kase cousins – Dunstall, Jeremy and Danniby – were in fine form while youngsters Jason Logi, Thaddeus Wilket and Alphonse Gelu Jr stood out for Dockers.
The lead changed hands a few times throughout the match before the Dockers pulled away to win 26-22. Meanwhile, POMAFL president Douglas Lai has urged all the clubs to make use of the short season which will run for seven weeks before the finals which are scheduled for the end of next season.
