A doctor was attacked in the early hours of Saturday morning in Port Moresby.
The victim, Dr Akule Danlop, was returning home after attending to an emergency surgery at the Port Moresby General Hospital when he was attacked at Boroko between 1am and 2am, leaving him with a broken left arm. He is the second doctor to be attacked in Port Moresby after finishing late duty.
National Doctors’ Association president Dr James Naipao said Danlop had an emergency surgery yesterday and plates were inserted into his left arm.
Dr Sawi Wawen, who did the surgery on Danlop, said there was no nerve damage in the arm.
Danlop was relieved that he would be able to continue to use his hands as he was left-handed.
Naipao described the attack on the doctor as “animalistic behaviour” but said the attackers’ behaviour showed how much people were suffering because of the downturn in the country’s economy.
He felt that they were struggling to put food on the table, especially in towns and cities.
Naipao warned the public to take precautions when moving around and urged anyone who had seen the attack or knew anything about the attack to report what they knew to the police.
Danlop is a general surgeon, who was doing post-masters studies in plastic surgery. He is recovering at the Port Moresby General Hospital.
Metropolitan Superintendent Perou N’dranou said he was yet to be updated about the doctor.
