Dog owners urged to bring pets for free baths

SOME lucky dogs in Port Moresby received free baths at the Dog Pound in Gordon last Saturday.
The monthly dog wash, hosted by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), saw more than 20 dogs benefited.
RSPCA’s Jimmy Bill said people who keep pets, especially dogs, needed to look after and care for them to ensure a longer life.
Bill said the dog wash happened at the beginning of the month and encouraged dog owners to go to RSPCA to register their dogs to take part.
Dogs were bathed with flea shampoo and other cleaning agents.
Bill said RSPCA carried out dog collections on Wednesdays and Thursdays where they went out and collected stray dogs and brought them to the pound.
“We also collect dogs from people who do not want them, as well as stray dogs that are sick or malnourished,” he said.
“Our vets then treat them and see if they recover we put them up for adoption and give them a second chance at life and a good home.”
Bill said there were 29 dogs currently kept in the dog pound undergoing treatment and some awaiting adoption.
He said people who wished to adopt them could fill an adoption form which costs K320 and register their dog for K10.
The next dog wash will be on Oct 5.
RSPCA is a charitable organisation committed to the welfare of “all creatures great and small” in PNG.

  • I think RSPCA should go around the city and pick up all the street dogs and give them regular bath. That will improve the city’s image. by having more well-groomed street dogs.
