DOLPHINS beat Vikings 12-8 after extra time in the Motu-Koita Rugby League A-Grade grand final at the Papua New Guinea Football Stadium in Port Moresby on Saturday.
Right on the buzzer, Vikings defenders were caught off guard and Dolphins Beika Boe dived over near the uprights to snap the deadlock and seal the win.
This was Dolphins’ maiden grand final appearance and they bagged the National Capital District Governor’s Cup and K8,000 while Vikings settled for K4,000 and the runners-up trophy.
Dolphins have now been invited by confederate director Gwaibo Mairi to compete at the Southern Club Championships.
Governor Powes Parkop, who allocated K50,000 this season, pledged to double the amount next year. He attended the grand final with Mairi and Moresby South Rugby League president Brown Murema.
Making their third grand final appearance, Vikings were stretched to the limit by a much younger Dolphins outfit, who executed their game plan well.
Coach Haoda Kone said: “We maintained our discipline and played to the whistle. We were focused for the entire game and it paid off. We played our cards right from the start knowing that the referee’s decisions were final and we had to play to the best of our ability to win.”
The scores were locked at 8-8 at fulltime. Dolphins scored their unconverted tries through Andrew Mako and Thunder Martin while Heni John bagged a double for Vikings.
