Donald: Amend laws before further talks

NORTH Fly MP James Donald says amendments to the Oil and Gas Act (1998) should be made before discussions can progress on the development of the P’nyang gas project in Western.
Donald said after considering all aspects surrounding the country, and more importantly his people of Western, specifically for North Fly, he was convinced that the P’nyang project should be delayed until an amendment was done to the Oil and Gas Act.
“I made my own decision without fear or favour and as a host leader to the P’nyang project,” he said.
“I announce that we now shelve away the P’nyang project pending amendments to the Oil & Gas Act 1998.
“I have travelled the globe following various negotiations, with now the recent trip into Sydney and it seems we are getting nowhere closer.
“I have made up my mind to speak out, that we’ve lost the plot as a country.
“So why are we wasting our time when we either make a radical decision or we do it the same old conventional way expecting the same outcome?”
Donald said reasons for wanting the project to be delayed were:

  • The Oil & Gas Act was outdated and had no maximum benefits to the country at large, including landowners, local level governments and provincial governments; and,
  • He was looking forward to seeing if the Government would honour its commitment to reform all resource laws.
in the country, including the Oil and Gas Act.

  • Can this MP spell out what he actually meant regarding the benefits he wanted for us the LOs, Western Province and PNG? Noken pairap olsem pop corn natin natin!
Every demands made must be justified and explained in detail in a sanctioned press release for public consumption by general population if there are certain things him, his governor and advisors sees as not in the best interest of the District and the Province. There are educated, experience and patriotic Papua New Guineans and even experts out there constantly surfing both main stream and social media network that can back us highlight issues for our country’s benefits. He should understand also that any developer makes money for its stake holders also and not one way traffic otherwise what’s the point. In P’nyang project our LO’s intitial position has always been to have the project developed as ‘Stand alone’ and we thank PM JM, Davies and Kua for giving us that status. Our next position which we are mindful of is the ‘Benefit Sharing’ package which we believe and trust in anticipation that same government will consider a maximum benefit package that will economically empower us, our district, province and the 8million population of this beautiful country.

  • Full support. We the LOs of the P’nyang are with the SNT and not with Politicians including our NF MP and this is fact, we have given our position paper to our SNT already and awaiting a good outcome. Our good leader JD, honestly speaking we are not with you, because Pnyang project is the project of transformation and it will put the people of OLsobip to the world and not through Government fundings. Please allow SNT to proceed with negotiation and conclude with GA.
