MORE than 5,000 students from six primary schools in Maprik are benefiting from books donated by the Australian Books for PNG Kids.
Maprik probation officer for the Justice and Attorney-General Department, Jonah Linus, said he took the initiative to write to the organisation and requested for books as he believed books helped to improve literacy rate.
“As a lead person in the programme, I believe that as educated elites, that is what we are obliged to do,” he said.
“To give value and service back to our communities.”
Linus said 300 cartons of books were given to Maprik Admin, Jame, Yamil, Balupwine, Aunyalup Bango and Our Lady of Lourdes primary schools.
He said there were; reading books, science and social science books, fiction and non-fiction books, dictionaries, encyclopedias, atlases and various school materials.
Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School head teacher Abraham Sondambui said the books supplemented students’ learning.
“Most of the students who read more improved their English skills, particularly in reading and writing.”
He said most students depended on the encyclopedias which were helpful in researching specific subjects.
