“DON’T give up, keep fighting,” East New Britain Governor Michael Marum tells Waterhouse Memorial High School students during their graduation last Friday.
“Education is the key for a better future,” he said.
“We have to invest more on our students as they are our human resource in the future.
“To the students, those that will not make it through, that’s not the end, keep fighting.
“Those that will make it, tomorrow will be tough for you so keep working harder.
“Prove yourself in your commitment towards your studies that you can be somebody else in the future and never underestimate the potential in you to excel.”
Following village clashes in the Gelagela area, the school had been affected badly with suspension of classes but Marum commended the hard work and effort put in by the school staff for making sure students attended classes.
Marum said student learning should be a priority and must not be disturbed despite any situation faced as they were the future leaders for tomorrow.
“I understand the school has been affected greatly due to fights but I would like to thank teachers, parents and village leaders for making sure that our students attend classes.
“You all have done a great job. Learning for students must be a priority in any circumstances,” Marum said. Meanwhile, school principal Mesulam Gamaliel acknowledge the presence of Marum and said his availability at the graduation had given them the assurance to continue to strive to be the best school.
He said despite them being faced with acute school infrastructural developments, huge support had come from parents who made it possible for them to continue running the school through to the end.
Waterhouse Memorial High School on Friday graduated its 57 second batch of Grade 10s.
The first was last year but due to the Coronavirus pandemic, they didn’t stage any graduation.
Marum also made a late call to the school, pledging his support to donate a school truck and that would be made available by the end of this year.
