THE New Ireland Drongos 7s have received K100,000 in sponsorship from the New Ireland government to participate in the 2023 Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited Super 7s series.
The sponsorship is by far the biggest for rugby union in the province and represents the value of rugby’s contribution to the socio-economic wellbeing of youths in the province.
New Ireland Rugby Union (Niru) president Charlie Melachon said the Drongos would participate in the remaining two legs of the 7s series.
The remaining series in July would be held in Rabaul for New Guinea Islands and Port Moresby for Southern region. PNG Rugby Union have completed the Mt Hagen (Highlands) and Lae (Momase) series.
Melachon said apart from creating a conducive social avenue to drive positive change.
“Niru has assembled its first ever female rugby rep side to participate in the upcoming Super 7s series third leg in Rabaul,” Melachon said.
“Niru is bridging the gap between young people and the business community that are involved directly or indirectly with rugby union for possible education and employment pathways.
“Niru is promoting and reaching out to the wider youth communities to get involved in creating awareness on issues affecting the communities.”
