GOROKA police have arrested and charged a man for allegedly attempting to smuggle 24Kg of marijuana out of the province.
Police said the suspect packed four 10kg of rice bags mixed with vegetables and bribed securities at the entrance of the departure terminal with K200 and got his bags checked and got a boarding pass for an Air Niugini afternoon flight from Goroka to Port Moresby last Wednesday.
Just before the plane took off, Night Owl security guard in the terminal alerted the police.
Police officer Reuben Hombiae rushed into the plane and picked up the suspect, Albert Panu from Kesevaka, Henganofi.
Eastern Highlands provincial police commander Chief Supt Augustine Wampe commended his men and security guards for the job well done and said it was the major drug case his men were working hard to catch anyone involved in drug trafficking.
“The suspect will face the full force of the law and will appear before the Goroka District Court tomorrow to answer his charges,” Supt Wampe said.
Meanwhile, Night Owl Security Services managing director Winchlee Oibotee said he had informed his men to allow drug smuggler to board the plane before alerting the police.
“My guards were not at fault by accepting K200 bribery, this is part of the plan to capture them. This is not our first time to get this drug dealer, we already use the strategy to catch one already,” Oibotee said.
