LAE City Dwellers over the weekend received K50,000 from Lae MP John Rosso, a timely assistance to boost the team’s upcoming National Soccer League campaign.
Rosso presented the cheque to coach Peter Gunemba and captain Raymond Gunemba at Papuan Compound on Sunday.
The assistance is part of the Lae City Authority’s continued support to sporting associations and teams that represent the Morobe capital.
Other city teams that received the authority’s support were Lae Tigers, Papuan Compound Ravens, Harlequins and Unitech Spartans as well as Morobe Rugby Union.
Peter lauded Rosso for the timely assistance which would boost their preparations for the season.
He said Dwellers, established in 2015, were the first Morobe team to snatch the league title from nine-time champions Hekari United.
“At that time, former Morobe governor Kelly Naru stepped in to support the club,” Peter said.
“The Morobe government’s support saw Dwellers representing the city, province and country.
“Rosso’s support is part of his work in developing human resources in his electorate.
“Dwellers have created an opportunity for unemployed youths to advance from playing at the club level to semi-professional football and receive some money.”
Asking business houses to support youths, Peter said the football industry was expanding each year.
“It’s a first time for a Lae MP to give such an amount of K50,000 to Dwellers,” he said.
