A LATE comeback in the final quarter saw the West Eagles claim a 27-20 win over a gutsy Lamana Dockers side in Saturday’s main match of the Port Moresby AFL competition.
A determined Dockers side proved their worth in the opening half with defender Peter Lavong containing Eagles forwards Kila Rawali and Jeffery Vogai.
The Eagles broke through towards the end of the first half for a 13-8 lead, however, a composed Dockers side saw them score two goals in the third quarter for the lead (20-14).
The Eagles fought back in the final quarter to keep Dockers scoreless with Rawali spearheading their attack for two behinds and a goal to steal the game at fulltime.
Dockers coach Stanis Isu said he was happy with side’s performance against the defending champions after a slow start to their preparations this season.
“I’m very happy with my guys and I think they did extremely well against the Eagles,” he told The National.
Everyone did everything on the field as a team all game but we fell short in the end so that’s something we’ve noted.
“We can at least say that we’ve put up a good fight today and I think we can only get better for the remaining round.
“We did not have a proper preparation leading up to this short season but we’ve managed to get ourselves organised and ready for games.”
