WANTOK Gaming Systems Mt Hagen Eagles will be announcing their 25-man squad for their opening match against Toyota Enga Mioks in the Digicel Cup in Wabag next Sunday.
The Eagles will be coming up with a formidable side after some encouraging performances during their trial matches.
Current Kumul forward Francis Ray said yesterday that the trial games had worked out well for them and it was now up to the board to finalise the squad before the season kicks off.
In their first trial against the Lae Snax Tigers, the Eagles drew 22-22 but went down to the Structural Bridging Systems Muruks 16-10.
Ray said he was confident the board would select an exceptional side for the season.
Another Kumul George Moni and Simon Young did not participate in the trials against the Muruks due to minor injuries.
However, Dion Aiye, Emmanuel Kunjil, Jason Tali, Steven Neng and little general Willie Guambo gave the former champions a good run for their money in the trials during the Easter weekend.
“It is good that most of the players took part in the last trial games. We had two teams participating in the trial matches in Lae last weekend.
“We will work on our mistakes and hopefully do better when the season kicks off,” Ray said.
He added that the Eagles’ confidence was reaching great heights with the return of some of their former players and the support from their fans was gaining momentum.
