East Sepik to host games

THE East Sepik Provincial Grassroots Games will kick off at the Sir Michael Thomas Somare Stadium in Wewak on Saturday, according to an official.
“We are not asking teams to register because these games are funded for the people by our leaders,” Games chairman Clarence Hukahu said.
The finals and presentation of medals and trophies will be done in January.
“We don’t like to give cash prizes to winning teams because we want them to develop good sportsmanship as part of their social upbringing,” he said.
“East Sepik has produced many fine athletes and we would like to continue developing good sportsmen and women for the province and PNG.”
But Hukahu said spectators would be charged an entrance fee of K1 per adult and 50t per child.
“We don’t want to ask for fees but we need it to pay the hardworking people who maintain the stadium,” Hukahu said.
“The revenue from the fees will also go towards helping pay for the men who will provide security for the event.”
He invited associations, schools, communities, wards and districts to compete in the Grassroots Games which will involve dart, futsal, kickboxing, netball, touch and volleyball.

  • What hard working people? What maintenance? The Somare Stadium is just a fancy grandstand constructed by the Chinese years ago with a big, rough unattended paddock in front of it. It is merely a facade without anything else substantial to support it. A bit like Sir Michael himself.

  • what an amazing thing going on for the people of East East Sepik. the great thing and keep the fire burning
