PNG Power Ltd’s strategy planning manager Asiba Togaro says the Edevu hydro-power project is needed to boost electricity supply to Port Moresby.
“We also need this project to boost electricity supply along the villages in the Kairuku-Hiri electorate in the Central province and all the way to the Gulf province,” Togaro said
“We have plans to connect electricity from this hydro-power plant to the main grid by 2022.
“We are also looking at doing away with diesel-powered generating plants and going into other energy sources like hydro and gas power plants.”
Meanwhile, PNG Hydro Development chairman Allan Guo said that they had struggled for the past six months to continue the construction of the Edevu Hydro Dam due to the strict China Development Bank requirements.
“PNG Power Ltd has agreed to give us power-purchasing agreement letter for us to provide to the bank to access funding. We are still waiting for PNG Power to provide us that letter.”
Guo said they had invested K90 million on the project since 2009.
